Dancehall is a Jamaican popular music genre that dates back to the late 1970s. [4] Dancehall began as a more stripped-down version of reggae than the roots style, which dominated the 1970s.

Dancehall had become mainstream in Jamaica, as well as the United States, Canada, Australasia, and Western Europe, by the early 2000s.

Unlike earlier Dancehall, this new era was marked by musical structures found in mainstream pop music, such as repetitive choruses, melodic songs, and hooks. Some of the lyrics were more wholesome, with less intimate material and profanity.

Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Popcaan, Vybz Kartel, Konshens, Mr. Vegas, Mavado, Ward 21, Lady Saw, and Spice were among the performers who popularized this new age of Dancehall, with some of them achieving international recognition.

Vybz Kartel aka World Boss

Vybz Kartel is a Jamaican reggae dancehall recording singer, composer, record producer, entrepreneur, and convicted killer. He was born on January 7, 1976. He is referred to as “Worl’ Boss” among his many nicknames.

After a succession of songs in Jamaica, Kartel catapulted to stardom in 2003. At the annual dancehall event Sting in Kartel’s hometown of Portmore, the year ended with a pre-planned on-stage battle with Ninjaman.

His 2010 tune “Clarks” was one of his most successful worldwide hits, spending 40 weeks in the top three reggae singles and receiving the greatest radio airplay in North America. “Clarks” was also included in a CNN segment about dancehall dancing and on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance Canada.

The Big Bad Bounty Killa

Bounty Killer, born Rodney Basil P r i c e on June 12, 1972, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall deejay. “One of the most violent dancehall performers of the ’90s, a street-tough nasty lad with an unabashed propensity for gun talk,” according to AllMusic. He is widely regarded as one of the most talented dancehall lyricists of all time.

During the 2019 pandemic quarantine on May 23, 2020, the two conducted a well-received Verzuz combat together on Instagram.
