The Rastafarian Edition

The Rastafarian movement is decentralized and mainly sectarian in nature. The Nyahbinghi, Bobo Ashanti, and the Twelve Tribes of Israel are the most notable denominations or “Mansions of Rastafari,” each giving a particular interpretation of Rastafari ideology. Rastafarians number between 700,000 and 1,000,000 people worldwide. Although small settlements can be found in most of the world’s main population centers, Jamaica has the largest population. Rastafarians come from a variety of racial backgrounds, but the majority are of black African heritage, and some mansions only allow black people. Reggae’s international popularity soared in the mid-1970s.

The Great King Solomon

Solomon, according to the Hebrew Bible, began construction on the First Temple in Jerusalem in the fourth year of his reign, using the immense money he and his father had amassed; he dedicated the temple to Yahweh, Israel’s God. Solomon is described as having more wisdom, wealth, and power than any of the preceding rulers of Israel.

Later references and rumors about him abound, most notably in the 1st-century apocryphal text known as the Testament of Solomon. In the New Testament, he is depicted as a wise teacher who is surpassed by Jesus, as well as a glorious figure who is surpassed by “the lilies of the field.” Solomon was also known as a magician and an exorcist in subsequent years, especially in non-biblical societies, with several amulets and medallion seals from the Hellenistic period invoking his name.

Haile Selassie was granted the title “King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah” when he was crowned. Rastafarians call Haile Selassie “Almighty God,” “Judge and Avenger,” “King Alpha and Queen Omega,” “Returned Messiah,” “Elect of God,” and “Elect of Himself,” among other titles. Haile Selassie is also seen by Rastafarians as a symbol of their acceptance of Africa as a source of spiritual and cultural heritage.
