80’s Reggae Queens
Reggae became a global music sensation after exploding with such intensity and distinctive sound from Jamaica. Men are the most well-known names in reggae, but women have contributed just as much, if not more, to the genre. Female reggae performers exude genuine force and passion on stage, and they deserve to be better known. Here are a few female reggae performers that are embedded in Jamaica’s rich music history.
Alpharita Constantia Mar-ley
Rita met Bob Marley in the mid-1960s after meeting Peter Tosh. She was asked to audition for the Soulettes after it was discovered that she was a singer. Rita, her cousin Constantine “Dream” Walker, and Marlene “Precious” Gifford were among the members of the group. Bob Marley, who was a member of the Wailers vocal trio at the time, along with Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh, became the group’s mentor and manager, and he and Rita fell in love while working together.
Sister Nancy aka Muma Nancy
Sister Nancy, nicknamed Muma Nancy, is a Jamaican dancehall DJ and singer who was born on January 2, 1962. Her real name is Ophlin Russell. She is regarded as the first female dancehall DJ, and has been described as the dancehall scene’s “dominating female voice for almost two decades.”
“Bam Bam,” a “well-known reggae anthem” according to the BBC and a “classic” according to The Observer, is one of her most recognized songs.
Marcia Griffiths
A Queen of 80s Reggae Music
Marcia Llyneth Griffiths is a Jamaican vocalist who was born on November 23, 1949. “She is known mostly for her strong, smooth-as-mousse love ballads and compelling live performances,” one reviewer said.
Griffiths, who was born in West Kingston, Jamaica, began her career in 1964, when she joined Byron Lee and the Dragonaires on stage at the request of Phillip James of The Blues Busters, who had heard her singing in her neighborhood.
