Best Standing Desk for Short Users – Uplift v2 Commercial
This desk comes in a fairly standard size measuring 30” x 60”, but there are two main factors that make this desk unique. First, is the price tag of just $847. Next, is the fact that the desk can drop all the way to 22.6.” For our reviewer, Greg, who is 6’ tall, this height renders the desk unusable, however, shorter users may be able to take advantage of this height to maximize comfort.
The Uplift also features a traditional cross bar design, which provides great stability. When the desk is extended to its full height, there can be some front-to-back movement, but this may not be an issue for shorter users who will be using it at a lower height.
Overall, the brand offers the best complete top selection with finishes including hardwood, bamboo, powder coated, and much more. One additional option worth noting is the programmable switch that comes in several control configurations including a paddle switch and a standard up and down switch.
Another bonus is the effective collision avoidance system that is powered by the control box and 6-way accelerometer. The Uplift comes with a 350 lb weight capacity and with extensive testing, we have found that the desk has no problem lifting that amount of weight.
One potential drawback is that the electronics package is just okay. Fortunately, the brand has recently updated its policy to include a 15-year warranty, which does apply to the electronics, so you will be protected if something does go wrong. Just keep in mind that surfaces are only covered for 5 years, so be careful with how you handle different materials.
Another recent improvement is that Uplift now has a free return program on most models although this won’t apply to any custom tops. This is an important feature to look for in any brand as you shop standing desks.

Best Standing Desk for Tall Users – Fully Jarvis Extended
The Jarvis comes in several different frame options, so be sure to order the extended version if you need something that will accommodate tall users. This desk can reach a maximum height of 51.1” and retails for about $759. It comes from the same manufacturer as the Uplift but features a different frame.
The orientation of the frame follows a standard model, but also includes a wedge system, which they recently started incorporating to improve lateral stability.
Users who are about 6’5” will find that the desk gives them plenty of height for proper use Remember that extending any desk to its maximum height will affect stability, but the wedge system helps to combat this common issue. A lack of front-to-back stability is noticeable and most likely the result of a fit issue within the columns. Moving the desk will cause some rocking, especially as the desk gets taller. This isn’t a major issue, but it is something to be aware of while also recognizing that stability issues are a natural characteristic of taller desks.
The electronics include a programmable switch OLED, which is the only one we have seen on the market. While it is aesthetically pleasing, the display lacks some functionality when compared to traditional tactile switches. The memory presets are convenient, but overall, the switch isn’t as intuitive and when it goes to sleep, it can be difficult to reactivate.
A 6-way accelerometer provides collision avoidance so that if the desk hits something, it will immediately reverse course and this works in both directions. This feature is meant to prevent damage to other furniture or fingers that might have gotten in the way. It is a nice safety feature to look for in any standing desk.
The rest of the electronics and gears are made in China and are once again just okay. The 15 year-warranty does help to offset any reservations about the electronics since you will be able to get replacements if necessary. In addition, this does come from a well-known brand, so you can feel confident that they will honor the warranty to help protect their reputation.
The main concern is that they only offer a one-year warranty on their surfaces, which is clearly a big discrepancy from the frame warranty and only a fraction of the Uplift’s warranty. If lifting capacity is a concern, the Fully Jarvis Extended advertises a 350 lb capacity and our tests found that to be accurate.
However, the return policy leaves something to be desired. While there isn’t a restocking fee, you will be asked to pay for return shipping, which can add up depending on where you live. This might not be a dealbreaker, but it is something to be conscious of.

Best Standing Desk for Easy Assembly – Vari ProDesk
The most popular configuration of this desk retails for $795 and is by far the easiest desk we have found to assemble and this is by design. When the early series of this desk was introduced, it did have a cross support, but that is something that was phased out. This omission simplifies assembly, but as to be expected, it also affects the amount of lateral stability.
At the same time, the desk now incorporates square tubes that provide great front-to-back stability.
When the company first made the transition to this newer style, they also changed manufacturers so that all of our top three standing desks come from the same manufacturer.

For a person who is 6’ and using the desk at about 44”, the front-to-back stability remains strong with very little movement. However, removing the cross support has resulted in more lateral movement. As we saw with the Uplift model, a wedge system may be able to solve this problem, but Vari has yet to incorporate this innovation.
The height adjustment ranges from 25” to 50.5” and comes standard with a four-button switch that is tactile and easy to use. It also incorporates a collision avoidance system that may not be quite as sensitive as other models, but still provides plenty of protection.
Since ProDesk is using the same electronics as the previous desks that were reviewed, there isn’t anything truly standout about these components. However, the Uplift and Fully Jarvis both offered a 15-year warranty, which is three times as much as ProDesk. Despite operating with the same fundamental equipment, the Vari ProDesk comes with just a 5-year warranty.
The weight capacity on this desk also drops significantly to 200 lbs. On a more positive note, the company does offer full refunds, so you will get all your money back if you aren’t completely happy with the desk.

Best Standing Desk for Heavy Lifting – VertDesk v3 Plus
For $900, users can take full advantage of a 450 lb weight capacity, which means that the VertDesk v3 Plus can handle practically any equipment that you might need to lift. Since it is built to handle heavy weight, stability was also a priority when designing the desk. Incorporating traditional cross support creates a more stout desk with little lateral movement.
This same level of stability is also present when it comes to front-and-back movement and is part of the reason why the desk has a height adjustment level of 20”. The desk offers a range of 27” to 47” inches in height, which allows it to provide maximum stability and avoid overlap issues in the columns.
While this desk does come with the highest retail price, it also includes features that justify any added cost. First and foremost, VertDesk comes with premium gears and motors from the German manufacturer Ketterer, which has been in the business for decades. The control box comes from Lang Innotech. It is well-constructed and utilizes cutting-edge technology, including a gyro sense for collision avoidance and voice control capabilities that are compatible with Android and IOS devices. The VertDesk is also worth the price because it comes with a lifetime warranty that covers all components.
The limited height adjustment range may not make it the right choice for every user and it does tend to be noisier than other models we have tested. Fortunately, if you experience any problems and decide that it isn’t the best choice for your space, you can return it for free.

Best Standing Desk from a Major Brand – Steelcase Solo
This standing desk retails for around $840 and is backed by a reputable brand that was the largest manufacturer in the world until Herman Miller acquired Knoll, so you can feel confident about your purchase. To create this desk, Steelcase partnered with Linak to design and manufacture the frame. This is the first time Has used a single motor lifting system and it proved more than capable of handling the 295 lb weight capacity, however, uneven loads did make a difference in how the desk operated, so you may want to take this into account as you organize your desk.
The Steelcase Solo is also a good choice if you don’t want to deal with a complicated assembly process. In fact, this model came in just behind the Vari ProDesk for assembly time. It employs a quick connect system, which may not provide the sleekest look, but certainly simplifies assembly.
Because of the collaboration with Linak, the desk features high-quality components and electronics and comes with a 12-year warranty, which is standard for Steelcase.
When it comes to stability, there can be a lot of lateral movement once you raise the desk to about 44”. The front-to-back stability is more solid, but you may still experience some movement. Unlike other models we have discussed, it doesn’t use a crossbar or wedge system. The quick connect system, which doesn’t require the use of bolts, also contributes to the instability.
The top is made from high-pressure laminate, which is usually both attractive and durable, but they have opted for a low-quality laminate. The bottom of the desk consists of a simple paper backing, making it more prone to dents and damage. The desk’s feet also leave something to be desired and detract from the overall quality of the desk. If you aren’t happy with the desk, you can return it for free.
All five of these desks are solid options, especially considering the price. Choosing the right one for you may depend on your height and other preferences.
